Neighborhood Shooting

Unfortunately, on Monday, March 14th at approximately 2:50PM several shots were fired in what appears to be a gang retaliation. No one was harmed and according to police, it was not an incident typical of our neighborhood.

Several witnesses provided information, but key witnesses refused to speak with police. What is known is that the vehicle involved was a white late model compact Mazda with black stripes. Police are asking if anyone sees this vehicle to try and obtain a license plate number and then call our Senior Lead Officer, Tracy Hauter at (323) 387-9617.

While the Avenues enjoys very low crime rate, it is always important to remember to keep our eyes open.

  1. Dear Editor,

Thank you for this bulletin but could you please be more specific on the cross streets.

Low crime rate? We have one of the highest in the nation. CA rate is 5.6, LA is 11.59 and Crenshaw & Adams hosts 55% of all violent crimes in the city. This is more than half of the crime in LA occurs in our immediate area. However there are more home invasion on the West Side. LA is called the gang capital of the world. The main reason crime has dropped since 2006 is because gang members have had injunctions against them not to return here. Most have moved to Lancaster and Palmdale with 19% of them moving to Oakland, CA. You know I have to drive my son everywhere because he has a 1 out of 8 chance of getting murdered just walking up to Crenshaw. It is your duty to investigate these statistics before telling people "we have a relatively low crime rate". Southeast division has only 8 officers deployed to cover three CDs. The West Side has 8 officers per 1 CD. We are under protected over here which is why we have the highest rate of abandoned dogs because folks get them for protection then leave them when they move out. We also have 23K Houses and 22K Apts with 73% of our constituents being renters. Renters usually do not attend neighborhood meetings and there fore are uninformed how to prevent crime before it happens in 90018.

  2. Shane,

Thank you for posting your comment. While crime numbers and statistics go up and down all over Los Angeles, the area we are specifically speaking about is West Adams Avenues which is bordered on the east at Arlington, south at Adams, north at the 10 Freeway and west at Crenshaw.

We have a very active community here and encourage you and others to attend any of our neighborhood meetings which are held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 3425 Adams (corner of 5th and Adams)at 7PM. Another meeting you should be aware of is the monthly Community Police Advisory Board (C-PAB) which meets on the first Monday of the Month. To find the location contact the Southwest Police Station Community Relations Office at (213) 847-5800. Finally, another great resource is your Neighborhood Council Meeting, United Neighborhoods Neighborhood Council (UNNC) which meets on the first Thursday of the month. You can find out more about our Neighborhood Council at http://www.UNNC.org

Regardless, all renters and home-owners have a say...and I like to say...it is not a home unless you have a neighborhood.

  3. Hi,

I like this blog and the effort by the community here. I have recently moved to 5th Ave, and it is safer than the area of South LA that I used to live in, but I must mention we still are in South LA here. According to the Homicide Report, there have 40 homicides in the last 4 years in a one mile radius of here. Jefferson Park, which is the same borders as West Adams Avenues except extended to Jefferson Blvd is ranked as 30th out of over 200 cities in neighborhoods in LA when it comes to crime. Although our small area may be relatively safe, we are 2 minutes from everything you can imagine!
