Use this opportunity to practice for the upcoming Presidential election!

Tonight there is a "Meet and Greet" with the candidates running for your Neighborhood Council (see time and location below). This will be followed by the actual voting day on Saturday, October 27, 2012.

FOR WEST ADAMS AVENUES you will be choosing one candidate from Area 3 and up to six from At Large Representatives (One is Avenues neighbor Anthony Carter and our own Benny H. Potter Park star, Carlton Stubbs!)

If you are at least 14 years old AND live, work, own property, own a business, go to school, worship, shop, or belong to an organization in the UNNC area, you may vote in this election. At the polling place, you will sign a Stakeholder Registration Form. You will not be asked for identification. You will be given a ballot depending on your Resident or Non-Resident status. Everyone votes for up to six At Large Candidates. Residents also vote for one Region Representative for their Area. We'll be meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, November 9 at 7PM. We'll be covering local issues and items and have some special guests from other neighborhoods.

Please remember to bring an unwrapped toy for the South Seas House Winter Wonderland happening in December.  

And, of course, there will be time afterwards for chatting with neighbors and catching up over some goodies and punch.

Easter for Kids in the Park

EASTER BASKETS AND EGG HUNT

Bring the kids to the South Seas House this Saturday, April 16! There will be a Spring Celebration where children (ages 2 to 12) can make Easter Baskets and then participate in an Easter Egg Hunt. From 12PM to 2PM, the kids will have creative activities and will get to enjoy what looks to be an absolutely beautiful spring day. Parents can also take advantage of this event to see what "LA Kids" classes will be offered for this spring and to sign up at the same time. For class dates and  times see below.

Halloween Activites to Remember

Halloween Carnival...For all your ghoulies and ghosties the Southwest Division, Los Angeles Police Department is holding a Halloween Carnival from Friday, October 29th through Sunday October 31st, in front of the Southwest Division Police Department station, 1546 Martin Luther King Blvd. Friday's times are 3:00PM to 11:00PM with weekend days being 1:00PM to 11:00PM. Bring your family for fun, games, food and rides. Ride tickets are extra and each ride requires 1 ticket.

Also, REMEMBER our own South Seas House will be holding a Haunted Halloween House with candy, games and activities for all the kids.

Essay Contest...The Education Consortium of Central Los Angeles (ECCLA), with the support of USC Civic & Community Relations, invites you to submit essays on the theme "What I Want Most that Money Can't Buy."

• Winners in Two Categories: 6th-8th grade, and 9th-12th grade.
• All contestants will receive a certificate of participation.
• Entries will not be returned and must be received by Friday, October 29th.
• School must be located roughly within the boundaries of Olympic, Slauson, Crenshaw, and Alameda for eligibility
• Cash awards in each category are:

First Place - $100

Second Place - $50

Third Place - $25

Design a bookmark for the County of Los Angeles Public Library...Do you love books and love to draw?

The 31st Annual Bookmark Contest is here! This year's theme is Swing Into Reading! Enter beginning September 7, 2010 in these categories:

Kindergarten – Grade 2
Grades 3 – 5
Grades 6 – 8
Grades 9 – 12

Library winners will be announced November 16-20, 2010. Grand prize winners will be announced in February 2011. Click here for an entry form.  

Contest Guidelines

• Draw a design about books or reading.
• Designs must be the original work of the artist.
• Bookmarks are judged on creativity, originality and neatness.
• Please, no cartoon characters or color drawings.
• Artists must be in Kindergarten through 12th grade, or between the ages of 5 and 18 years old.
• Artists must live in Los Angeles County.
• Limit one entry per person.
• Entries become the property of the County Library.

Speaking of rides, you can purchase ride tickets in ADVANCE for $20 for 10 tickets at LAPD -- Southwest Police Station. All rides require 1 ticket.

South Seas House Opens Doors for "LA Kids" Fall Schedule

As part of the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks programs for youth, Carlton Stubbs--Facility Director for the South Seas House in the Benny H. Potter West Adams Avenues Memorial Park--announced the fall program is ready to roll with many programs.

All classes being offered, are free of charge and begin October 4, 2010 so be sure to sign up TODAY! Each class, with the exception of the Snack Program, continues for 8 weeks.

Snack Program

Hip Hop Dance Class (ages 7 to 13)

Fitness Class (ages 6 to 12)
